WE ARE Supporting DocumentarIES
Titled Rugby Town – The Story of Halifax Rugby League, Director James Mellor is tasked with creating a documentary about this, with the Halifax Supporters Trust and with some help from The Community Foundation for Calderdale. Our aim is to promote Halifax and the sport across the world.
Celebrating the spirit of rugby and community, Rugby Town clinches the Best Film about a Team Sport award.
Rogaška, Slatina 22nd June 2024 – The critically acclaimed documentary Rugby Town has triumphed at the prestigious International Sport Film Festival in Slovenia, taking home the coveted Best Film about a Team Sport award. This victory marks a significant achievement for the film, which has captivated audiences with its heartfelt portrayal of the sport and its impact on a small community.
The Festival was attended by Director James Mellor, Editor & Writer Camron Stott and Danny Thompson, Associate Producer. We were all made incredibly welcome by festival Director Vojka Korosec, who showed us around the region.
Rugby Town delves Through the eyes of passionate fans and players, this captivating documentary invites you to join us on a journey through the stunning towns and countryside of Calderdale in central United Kingdom, as we uncover the remarkable story of how the development of Rugby League transformed Halifax into a true Rugby Town. Discover the warmth, humour, and unwavering spirit that have kept the sport of Rugby League at the heart of the Halifax community.
Director James Mellor expressed immense gratitude and excitement over the win: “We are honored to receive this recognition from such a distinguished festival. This award is a testament to the resilience and passion of the community and fans of Halifax Rugby League. It’s incredible to see their stories resonating with audiences globally.”
The International Sport Film Festival, held annually in Slovenia, is part of the Fédération Internationale Cinéma Télévision Sportifs (FICTS) circuit, which celebrates excellence in sports cinema by bringing together filmmakers, athletes, and fans from around the world. This year’s festival featured a diverse lineup of films that explore the multifaceted world of sports, making Rugby Town’s victory even more significant.
In addition to its success at the International Sport Film Festival, Rugby Town has been praised for its compelling storytelling, stunning cinematography, and the authentic depiction of its subjects. The film has sparked conversations about the role of sports in fostering community spirit and the universal values it promotes.
Producer Linda Kitson of the Halifax RLFC Independent Supporters Trust added, “Winning at the International Sport Film Festival is a true honour. We set out to create a film that not only entertains but also inspires and educates. This award is a validation of our team’s hard work and the incredible stories of those who live and breathe rugby.”
As a winner at the International Sport Film Festival in Slovenia, Rugby Town is now eligible for selection at the FICTS festival in Milan this November, offering another exciting opportunity for the film to reach a wider international audience.
